5 Healthy Breakfast Choices
by Elizabeth Dietz, Nutrition and Health Counselor and Licensed Certified Massage Therapist
Think of breakfast as an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of a new day. When you start your day off eating a good, healthy breakfast, the rest of your food choices throughout the day are much more likely to be health-inspired.
These breakfast foods help to create vibrant health, kick start your metabolism, give you energy and help regulate blood sugar.
#1: Smoothie
Smoothies are beyond delicious and very easy to make and clean up. Throw into a blender any fruits, yogurt, almond milk and make sure to add some dark greens and herbs. Be as creative as you’d like! Raw honey can add some sweetness.
#2: Coconut yogurt and fresh fruit
If you love yogurt, but have difficulty digesting it, try coconut yogurt. Use coconut yogurt just as you would normal yogurt, and serve it with fresh fruit or sprinkle with any super foods like Goji berries, seeds or nuts.
#3: Bircher muesli
Bircher muesli is a delicious breakfast food (or anytime snack!). Bircher muesli is not cooked and is made from mixing together oats, milk (organic or nut milk), grated apple, apple juice, honey, vanilla, cinnamon and a selection of chopped nuts and seeds.
Add to taste honey, maple syrup, juice of ½ lime, vanilla and/or yogurt.
#4: Eggs
Eggs are high in protein and help curb sugar cravings throughout the day. Add dark greens, tomatoes, onions and/or low fat cheese.
#5: Chia Pudding
Chia is an ancient grain that has been eaten for centuries, dating right back to the Aztecs and the Mayans.
Rich in micronutrients and high in essential fatty acids and amino acids, Chia seed is an ideal breakfast choice. You can make a delicious chia pudding by mixing chia seeds together with any liquid of your choice. Use water, nut milk, or fresh juice. Add fresh berries, vanilla, orange zest , stewed apple, sliced banana or cinnamon.
