Your First Professional Massage Session: What to Do?

Whether you are a “go with the flow” type of person or somebody who really enjoys a life without surprises, trying a new experience can sometimes be tough if you haven’t received the basic guidelines first. The following information and advice will help you overcome the potentially unknown aspects of receiving your first professional massage and keep you from talking yourself out of amazing and beneficial therapeutic experiences in the future.
The unknown can be your enemy! Before you make your appointment, do a bit of research. Ask your friends, family, trusted coworkers where they go for massage and who gives them the most professional service. Read reviews online before you call. When booking, inquire which therapist might best suit you. You may not know what your needs are, but the staff will likely have recommendations for you based on the basic info you give them. Remember, all massage therapists work different schedules so it is best to book in advance to reserve the one best suited for you.
Being on the same page is the best way to start. Be sure you and the Massage Therapist(MT) are in agreement about the general aspects of the session before the massage begins. When you meet your MT, he/she should review your information and help set expectations for the session. This is your best time to communicate your needs and goals, and mention that it is your first time. Ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable but remember, this may cut into your time on the table. A good therapist will guide you through the process and alleviate your concerns as much as possible throughout the entire session.
After the plan is established, the MT will instruct you to undress and get on the table between the sheets and will then leave the room to allow you to do so. “Undress to your level of comfort” is the typical phrase used. If you are comfortable undressing fully or just down to your underwear, that is usually preferred. Will clothes inhibit the massage? In some cases, yes. The MT will employ gliding techniques on the skin that are not possible while clothed. The MT will keep you modest by keeping covered the areas of the body not being massaged. If you are not comfortable undressing for whatever reason, discuss this before getting on the table and be sure it’s part of the plan.
During the massage, try to relax. Breathe deeply and let the MT work. Let your time on the table reset your mind and body. The MT will likely check-in with you from time to time throughout. If something feels painful, feel free to mention it to the MT. Likewise, if something feels great, you can communicate that too. A good therapist will adapt to your body and your needs but may need your guidance to do so effectively. It’s a process you work through together.
When the massage is over, you will know what to expect the next time. So go get the first one out of the way!
