My name is Diane Cowan, and I’ve been at Studio BE Pilates since 2005. I became an instructor at Studio BE Pilates after receiving my certifications in Core Dynamics in 2008. I’m also a Physical Therapist Assistant, working in the Northern Virginia Area for the past 27 years.
I was first introduced to Pilates in May of 2003 when I took an introductory course from The Professional Health & Fitness Institute, a physical therapy organization. I was hooked and immediately found a local studio to practice my Pilates skills.
In addition to being a Pilates instructor, I work full time in an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic. I teach professional ballet dancers with injuries to cross train using Pilates to build a stronger core and avoid overuse injuries. I also train post-stroke patients, helping them improve balance and coordination by applying Pilates principles for rehabilitation. A number of my PT clients also come to Studio BE where they continue to rehabilitate their bodies and improve their quality of life with Pilates. If you are 6 years old or 96 years old, it is never too late for Pilates!
I didn’t begin my Pilates training until I was over 40 years old. Now at 51, I am in better shape than when I was in my 30’s! My personal practice of Pilates keeps me in a good mental and physical health, which helps minimize stress and maintain mobility and flexibility. It also improves my balance and coordination and teaches me better proprioceptive skills, which means knowing where my body is in space and realizing how to engage the deeper musculature to avoid injury and strain.
I always look forward to training the clients at Studio BE. It’s my home away from home! When I work with clients, I am always trying to make a positive impact on them and, hopefully, change their lives through the amazing Pilates journey.
I will always honor the Pilates Method in my life. I know it will continue to motivate me and change me — for the remainder of my life.
