What Clients Say About Studio BE Pilates in Northern Virginia

I love Pilates and I love Studio B. It’s the only Pilates home I have known.

I’ve not been athletic since my teens and have never followed an exercise program for any length of time … but Pilates offers me the social support and personalized supervision I need. After I had cervical surgery last year (3 discs removed and bones fused) I was confident that my instructors would know how to build my strength up again safely. And soon I was back to a normal (for me) workout.

I love the friendliness of Studio B staff and clients; I love the tailored, personalized workout; I love the personal supervision by instructors who know bodies and know me; and — yes — I love the variety of equipment in the studio that keeps workouts from being boring.

When the pandemic hit and the studio closed, I knew I wanted to continue to exercise — and I knew I wouldn’t do it by myself. So trying a Zoom class seemed a good option.

It was fun!

I am amazed at how well the virtual classes work. I do one class and one private a week. My creative instructors have been able to vary the routines and use different “props” to keep things interesting. I bought a foam roller and borrowed a theraband and hand weights — and this week I used my granddaughter’s big “Frozen” ball when I didn’t have a magic circle. We use my piano bench for some exercises — but the best prop is a large, sturdy Ikea footstool that we use for short box!

The virtual class doesn’t require a lot of space, and I place my computer on the floor a few feet away for a clear view. The instructor can see me, and I can see her as she demonstrates different moves.

If anyone had told me early in the year that I’d be happily taking mat classes in July, I’d have thought they were nuts! I do miss the Reformer, and look forward to returning to the studio, but for now, this is a perfect setup.

Studio Be Pilates has been a savior to me on several different occasions and has made me fall in love with pilates! I first gave it a try when I was in severe pain and almost couldn’t walk. Carla had me work with Diane and she helped pop my pelvic bone back into place. I continued with private lessons and was amazed at how quickly my entire body strengthened, and more importantly how much better I felt performing everyday tasks with my brand new pilates body. Every instructor I’ve worked with at Studio Be is super knowledgable and focuses on what you (their client) needs. Classes are small enough that you get the proper attention from your trainer, which helps get great results. My posture has been amazing and the pain in my back is much less. Unlike a big corporate gym, this studio has a great atmosphere, it’s clean, the ladies are fun, and it’s a place you’ll love to get your workout on at!

I have been going to Studio Be for a couple of years now and love the atmosphere! I am not a fan of large, commercial gyms or large group classes. Studio Be is the perfect fit for me – the classes are small, which allows for personalized training and correction from each of the instructors. I primarily take Pilates mat and group equipment classes for strength and toning. This supplements my other exercise routine, which includes running and walking. This comprehensive program, combined with better eating, has allowed me to lose approximately 25 pounds over the past few months. After sitting all day at a desk and computer, Pilates is exactly what I need to relax and stretch my muscles. I use to get monthly massages to deal with my lower back pain. With Pilates 2-3 times per week, which has strengthened my core, I no longer need massages as a treatment method! I cannot say enough nice things about Carla and the rest of the instructors at Studio Be.

– Kelly

A I was completing my Peak Pilates training through Studio BE and also taking equipment and mat classes. All the teachers really know their information! They are also really great teachers, any questions I have had related to the exercises or my ability to teach the exercises have been answered so wonderfully. They have all made me feel much more confident in my ability to teach a class!

– Brittany B

Studio Be Pilates has given me my life back! I have several health issues that make exercise challenging. But the owner and instructors at Studio BE have worked with me to modify some of the exercise, allowing me to benefit from the work without risking injury! The atmosphere in the studio is modern and beautiful but I also love how warm and friendly it is! I’ve been going there for a while now, and it feels like family! LOVE Studio BE Pilates!!!!

– Mary Y

This is a great place – everyone genuinely wants to help even people completely new to Pilates such as myself to get the best out of this system. The studio is nice and clean and welcoming and the people are just fantastic.

Studio BE Pilates was a recommendation of a family relative. I attended mat classes, also tried several barre classes. Kristen was my instructor. She recommended I take a few private sessions to work on form. I started Pilates August 2016. I found so many benefits from Kristen’s private sessions I am continuing into 2018. Pilates has increased my strength, flexibility, and balance. I have a much stronger core. Through the private sessions Kristen has taught me to “think and do Pilates moves on a daily basis”. She always has a work out ready tailored to meet my needs. She is very detailed in describing how to move and what you should be feeling. She pushes me to work harder! I have tried many exercise programs — Jazzercise, Yoga, Pure Barre. These programs definitely have benefits, but Pilates is one that has helped me the most—improve my walking, coordination and posture. So happy I found Studio Be Pilates and Kristen.

Carla and the instructors at Studio BE gave me back my life! Two years ago, I was diagnosed with a neurological disease that causes an unsteady, staggering gait, and a loss of coordination and muscle strength. My toes were paralyzed, and I was unable to move them at all. Carla and the instructors at Studio BE worked with me, adapting exercises I couldn’t do, pushing me just the right amount to challenge me, yet keeping me safe. I can now move my toes, and my balance is improving. Some days I don’t even need my cane. The instructors I’ve worked with seem to have an innate sense of the body and movement that no amount of training could give them. You either have it or you don’t. And they have it!

– Mary Y.

It was October 2016. I was 63 years old and two years post-op from my second spinal surgery. More than 18 months of physical therapy had ceased to make a difference. I could only walk very short distances without the use of a cane and was afraid to lift anything heavy because I might injure my back. I knew nothing about Pilates, but I needed some form of exercise to regain strength and flexibility, and to improve my posture. After meeting with Carla, I signed up for an introductory package and started one-onone sessions, eventually settling into a routine of two sessions a week, each with a specific instructor. One year later, I can say with absolute certainty that this was one of the best decisions of my life. Not only have my strength, flexibility, and confidence vastly improved, but my posture is better and I am less reliant on my cane. I am no longer afraid of lifting reasonably heavy objects. On vacation in Europe this past summer, I surpassed my expectations of what I would be able to do—how far I could walk, how many steps I could climb, etc. Although, with the help of Studio Be’s instructors, I have achieved my original goals, I am continuously setting and reaching new ones. My instructors at Studio Be provide a wonderfully supportive environment, helping me find a way to continue to make progress. The Pilates method allows for unlimited variation and creativity in how to approach an exercise—if one way is too difficult, the instructors find another way. The relationship with my instructors, coupled with this “outof-the-box,” unique way of thinking, creates a sense of teamwork and gives me the ability to move forward. I would recommend Studio Be to anyone looking for a way to improve their physical and mental conditioning. I look forward to the two hours I spend in the studio every week and am very grateful that this has become a regular part of my life.

I came across Studio Be Pilates via a friend’s recommendation. I have struggled with pain and a compromised range of motion for years due an auto-immune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis. In short it is a rheumatological disorder that affects the spine but it attacks many joints as well. I was a bit apprehensive about signing up at first because I was not sure what to expect from Pilates on equipment, and I was fearful that it would be difficult and painful, but I was so wrong. Studio Be Makes the transition for beginners so super easy and slow because they require that you sign up for a 5 sessions beginner’s package first. I have been going to Studio Be for 4 years now and I just love it ! I have found that the equipment has helped me tremendously in improving my range of motion. I feel so much stronger, more flexible and it has even improved my balance. I can’t say enough about the staff at Studio Be. I work with Carla and Julia who are so understanding and encouraging. However, I have been taught by many different instructors and they are all very well trained, patient and aware of any limitations and work with my abilities. One thing that I am sure of is that Pilates is for everyone!! From the beginner to the advanced and from young to mature, there is a class and a routine that works for you.

I just wanted to say thank you for making my summer vacation one of the best in years. I started sessions last November and am now up to 3 a week. I went to Utah and Colorado for 8 days. I hiked up a trail that was 1000 ft up in altitude and a mile long, I river rafted, hiked up to the top of the continental divide and zip-lined. Felt great! I’m achieving my goals thanks to you all!

Two 5K’s in 6 days!  Unbelievable!  A year ago I was using a cane to try to walk the length of my driveway.  I was rehabbing from back surgery.  Thanks to my surgeon, his rehab team (who recommended Pilates), and Pilates I am now able to actively participate in my life. Finding the right Pilates studio for me was important; since I looked it is a continuation of my rehab.  Luckily I found Studio Be.   The instructors at Studio Be are excellent – very well trained. I started Pilates at Studio Be two times a week this past September.  The instructor took me from where I was (post op) and gently moved me along to where I am today (able to complete 5K’s).  My balance, flexibility and endurance continue to improve and I continue to enjoy my “new” active life. Here’s to Life and Studio Be

Studio Be Pilates has been a place of inspiration for me because of the professional and knowledgeable instructors. Each time I visit the studio, I feel more proficient in Pilates and feel stronger and more confident. I have learned so much from Daneen, and her exceptional understanding of Pilates and ability to transfer the information to me. I appreciate Carla’s leadership and management which provides a comfortable and stress free learning environment. She also has chosen an excellent group of instructors who provide a variety of styles to enhance my skill level. One of my most memorable instructors is Robin because she knows exactly what exercises work the areas on my body that need the most attention. I also feel the effects of the class for a few days after:) Since I have been attending classes and private sessions at the studio, I am more motivated to work on my problem areas and try new classes and exercises. Thank you to all of the instructors for a great place to work-out and become a more confident and healthy person.

Much thanks and gratitude to everyone at Studio Be for all you have done for me over the past 8 years. Pilates has enhanced my life both physically and emotionally. I feel so lucky to have found such a supportive, sensitive and talented group of teachers. You have helped me to discover and appreciate all the benefits pilates brings to my everyday well being. You have challenged me with your thoughtful lessons. You have inspired me to want to make Pilates a lifelong commitment. I am so grateful to have you in my life as my teachers and my friends.

– Wendy

I always love coming to Studio Be Pilates. There is always such a positive atmosphere. The minute you walk in you feel that you are going to be doing something really good for your body. There is almost a spa-like feel. Everyone is always so friendly and encouraging. The instructors take their work seriously. I take most of my classes from Deneen. She is an amazing and very knowledgeable instructor who understands the issues my body has.   She gives great directions and always tells us which muscle groups we are working. She insures our technique is proper so that we get full benefit. Despite the hard work her class is always fun.   Because of the great benefit, the great environment, I will continue to come for many years.

For Christmas 2007 my sister gave me a gift certificate for an Introduction to Pilates package at Studio Be. The certificate was good for 1 year, so I procrastinated until November of 2008 before making an appointment. That first appointment was the beginning of a process that has changed my life. At first I was at the studio 2-3 times each week, but as I began seeing the difference in my body, my energy, and my emotional well-being, I kept adding sessions so that I’m now at the studio 6 times each week. The highly trained and dedicated staff has been working together to present me with challenges designed to increase my strength, endurance, and muscle tone, adding more difficulty to the regimen as my ability and strength improve. Pilates is, for me, much more than an exercise program; at age 67 I face each new day with a joie de vivre that I haven’t felt in 20 years.

I would like very much to submit a testimonial based on my incredible experience in Pilates before and during my twin pregnancy. I took Pilates to strengthen and tone my body and to assist in my lower back pain. When I found out I was pregnant with twins, i assumed I would not able to do Pilates anymore but I was wrong.I attended classes and had an individual instructor who worked with me weekly to build strength and flexibility I needed to maintain a healthy pregnancy. I was able to continue Pilates until 31 weeks and I was able to carry my twins to term! I was amazed that throughout my pregnancy I was able to move freely, get off the bed and chairs independently and was not placed on bed rest. I attribute my recovery also to Pilates and the weekly and bi-weekly workouts have helped me get my body back! I have had an incredible journey so far and I want to thank StudioBe!

“Over the years, I’d developed back pain that was getting excruciatingly worse. Plus, I’ve taken some hard falls and my knees were stiff and painful, particularly on stairs or while standing for a period of time. My shoulders hurt and my hips hurt. On top of that, I had TMJ. Then, about a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with adult scoliosis. I went to an orthopedic doctor with a specialty in scoliosis and spine issues, who, in no uncertain terms, told me to take Pilates. Now, almost a year of Pilates later, I take to the stairs with not a twinge in my knees. I will always have scoliosis but my posture has improved visibly. My shoulders are more relaxed, and the back pain only surfaces now and then. My sense of balance is much better and my stamina has increased. The pain in my hips is lessened and the TMJ has totally disappeared. (Go figure!) Bottom line: I’m a believer!”

At Diane’s recommendation (I worked with her at the Piedmont Physical Therapy Center in Manassas), I came in six months ago to explore classes to help manage the pain and fatigue of rheumatoid arthritis, which I was diagnosed with 15 years ago. I was also recovering from surgery for three broken vertebrae (Oct. 2011), four hand surgeries, and a foot surgery. I started out once a week with Sherri, then moved to two duets a week, with Diane and Deneen respectively. For the first time in 15 years, I am now able to work a full schedule because I am relatively pain free probably 80% of the time. I can now also go on 5-mile hikes with my husband. After some classes, I am completely pain-free for two days after class. As a side note: I recently had a massage and the masseuse asked, “Do you work out a lot? Your muscle tone is amazing!” Of course I told her about Pilates! I am 54 years old and it’s been years since anyone said that to me! Such results after only 6 months! I’m sold for life! Thank you for giving me my life back!

I have had MS for 20 years. Exercise has always been an important part of my life both physically and mentally. Since no medication has helped, my doctors have told me the reason I am doing so well is the fact that I exercise almost everyday. A few years ago a friend suggested I add Pilates into my exercise program. I have been working with a personnel instructor at Studio BE Pilates since that time. I have found Pilates has helped me a very different way than my other exercise has. I have become much more aware of my body, especially my posture my core muscles. Most importantly even when not working with Carla I am aware of my body and how I am controlling it. I feel stronger and more importantly I feel I have more control of my muscles both large and small.
